MP3s that have caught my attention this month include Beach House’s ‘Gila’, taken from their new album ‘Devotion‘. Slowcore dream pop informed by The Velvet Underground and Nico, Gila is the highlight of an album of similarly melancholy and somnabulant tunes. Meanwhile, I am enjoying the obliquely titled ‘Recent Bedroom’ by Atlas Sound, from their rather pretentiously-titled new album ‘Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel‘. Atlas Sound is the brainchild of Bradford Cox of the somewhat dull and overrated (by Pitchfork anyway) post-rockers Deerhunter, and the album showcases some of his more indulgent tendencies over a more electronic sonic landcape. ‘Recent Bedroom’ is the best cut from that album, the kind of psychedelic pop – equal parts Shoegaze and Sonic Youth – that he seemed incapable of focusing on with his other band.
