I am a long-time Amazon reviewer with an interest in books, music and film. I come from London but live and teach near Grenoble, in France. If you would like me to review something, post your details using the field below. My interests are as follows:

Film : International cinema from Hollywood to the Asian extreme, from big studios to independents.

Books : from 20th century English and American literature to French, Indian, Latin American and Japanese fiction.

Music : from electronica to classic rock, indie, experimental, alt-rock, psychedelic, post-rock, alt-country, world music and hip hop.

Love the site. Great review of “Initials SG” (don’t tell the French, but he’s one of only three French musical acts I enjoy, along with Edith Piaf and our very own Grenoble legends Lutin Bleu). He did wonderful “Austin Powers”-style lounge jazz, and as you say he was a sonic innovator.

Though is it not a bit hyperbolic to describe him as “criminally underrated”? Are you suggesting that there should be indictments, trials, and convictions for those who dismiss his musical significance ?

How severely should they be punished?

    Hi John,

Yes I guess I got a bit carried away there.

Though in a parallel world of musical justice, I would set up some kind of truth and reconcilliation commission to establish the genuine sonic innovators.

I try to keep an open mind about French music, but Serge is one of the few French artists I like too. If France and England had to compete in an imaginary cultural Olympics, the French would win for their beautiful landscapes, winsome girls and great food & wine, Britain would claw back some points for music and sense of humour.
